Let's be honest....if you're visiting Maine, there's a good chance you're hoping to see a moose.

I know I always am.

No matter how many times I've spotted one over the years, I still get excited every single time. There's something unforgettable about seeing one standing quietly in a marsh, wandering through the trees, or unexpectedly appearing along a winding Maine road.

It's one of those moments that makes you stop, smile, and remember why Maine is such a special place.

If seeing a moose is on your Maine bucket list, the easiest way to guarantee a sighting is to visit the Maine Wildlife Park or book a guided moose tour. Both are wonderful experiences and give you the opportunity to learn more about these incredible animals up close.

But if you're like me, there's something extra special about catching a glimpse of one in the wild.

While there's never a guarantee you'll see a moose in the wild, there are two wonderful ways to greatly improve your chances—or even guarantee the experience.

Maine Wildlife Park

If you've never seen a moose before, the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray is one of my favorite recommendations. The park is home to native Maine wildlife that can no longer survive on their own in the wild, giving visitors the opportunity to see these incredible animals up close while learning about their habitats and the important work being done to care for them.

It's a fantastic stop for families, photographers, and anyone who simply wants to admire one of Maine's most iconic animals in a safe and educational setting. While you're there, you'll also have the chance to see black bears, bobcats, mountain lions, bald eagles, foxes, deer, and many other animals that call Maine home.

Guided Moose Tours

If you're dreaming of seeing a moose in its natural habitat but would appreciate a little help finding one, consider booking a guided moose tour. Local guides spend countless hours in the woods and know where moose are most likely to be feeding and traveling based on the season, weather, and time of day.

Many tours take place around sunrise or sunset, when moose are generally most active, and along the way you'll often learn fascinating facts about Maine's wildlife, forests, and history. While no guide can promise a moose sighting, they can certainly improve your odds—and the experience of exploring Maine's North Woods with someone who knows the area is worth the trip all by itself.

If there's one place most people associate with moose watching in Maine, it's the Moosehead Lake region. Surrounded by forests, wetlands, ponds, and miles of quiet roads, this area is one of the state's best-known places to look for moose.

Even if you don't spot a moose, the drive itself is unforgettable. The lakes, mountains, and North Woods scenery make this one of my favorite parts of Maine.

Kokadjo

Ask longtime Mainers where to look for moose, and Kokadjo almost always comes up. Just north of Greenville, this tiny community is surrounded by ideal moose habitat.

Why It's Worth the Drive

This is the Maine North Woods at its best—quiet, peaceful, and wonderfully remote. Slow down, enjoy the scenery, and keep your eyes open. Sometimes the best memories come from the drive itself.

Baxter State Park

Baxter State Park is famous for Mount Katahdin, but it's also one of the best places to experience Maine's wilderness. Moose are often seen feeding near ponds and wetlands throughout the park.

The scenery alone makes the trip unforgettable. If a moose happens to wander into view, consider it an incredible bonus.

The farther north you travel, the more it feels like you've discovered a different side of Maine—one that's quiet, scenic, and wonderfully untouched.

A Few Moose Tips

The best times to look for moose are around sunrise and sunset when temperatures are cooler and they're more active. You'll often find them near marshes, ponds, streams, and other wet areas where they feed on aquatic plants.

Keep your camera handy, but don't spend so much time looking through the lens that you miss the experience. Sometimes simply pulling over safely and taking in the moment is enough.

Please Be Careful

One thing every visitor should know is that moose are wild animals, and despite how calm they may appear, they are not tame or friendly.

If you see one, admire it from a safe distance and never try to approach it, feed it, or encourage it to come closer. Give it plenty of space and let it continue on its way.

It's also important to drive carefully, especially around sunrise and sunset when moose are most active. Moose are dark-colored, incredibly large, and can be surprisingly difficult to see until you're right on top of them. Collisions with moose can be extremely

dangerous because of their size and height.

Slow down on rural roads, pay attention to wildlife crossing signs, and always keep your eyes scanning the shoulders of the road. Getting to your destination safely is always more important than spotting a moose.
