It starts the same way every year.

You pull into a little roadside stand because you only need...

A pint.

Maybe two.

The sign says:

Fresh Wild Maine Blueberries.

Well...

You can't just drive by.

Five minutes later, you're carrying a flat of blueberries to your car.

You have absolutely no memory of making this decision.

It just...happened.

Congratulations.

You're officially participating in one of Maine's favorite summer traditions.

And we have a few notes.

First of All...

You did not buy too many blueberries.

Let's get that out of the way.

You bought exactly the number of blueberries you believed you needed...

...at the time.

Now...

Whether your freezer agrees with that decision is another story.

You'll Start Putting Blueberries on Everything.

Pancakes?

Obviously.

Waffles?

Absolutely.

Muffins?

Without question.

Yogurt?

Of course.

Oatmeal?

Why not?

Ice cream?

Now we're talking.

Salads?

Sure.

Smoothies?

Every morning.

Cereal?

Go for it.

Cheesecake?

Now you're thinking like a Mainer.

At some point you'll look at your dinner and genuinely wonder...

"Could blueberries go on this?"

You'll Learn the Difference.

You probably thought a blueberry...

...was a blueberry.

Bless your heart.

Now you know.

Wild blueberries.

The little ones.

The sweet ones.

The ones that somehow taste like an entire Maine summer.

The giant grocery store blueberries?

They're fine.

But you'll quietly say...

"They're just...different."

Because they are.

Your Fingers Will Turn Purple.

You won't notice right away.

Someone else will.

You'll look down and realize your fingertips have become the official color of blueberry season.

It's practically a badge of honor.

Your Freezer Starts Filling Up.

You buy freezer bags.

Lots of freezer bags.

You carefully label them.

"Blueberries."

As if there was ever going to be any confusion.

By August...

Your freezer contains enough blueberries to survive until spring.

Possibly longer.

You Start Giving Blueberries Away.

Neighbors.

Friends.

Family.

Visitors.

The UPS driver.

You're standing in your driveway saying things like...

"Take a bag!"

"I still have more!"

"I may have gotten a little carried away."

Everyone smiles.

Because they know exactly what happened.

You Become Financially Invested in Blueberry Season.

You hear someone mention that the crop is looking good this year...

...and you feel genuinely relieved.

You don't even realize you've become emotionally attached to blueberries.

It sneaks up on you.

Every Roadside Stand Becomes a Possibility.

You tell yourself...

"I already have plenty."

Then you see another handwritten sign.

WILD MAINE BLUEBERRIES

You slow down.

"I'll just look."

Nobody has ever...

in the history of Maine...

"just looked."

Then Comes the Baking.

Blueberry pie.

Blueberry crisp.

Blueberry buckle.

Blueberry cobbler.

Blueberry bread.

Blueberry muffins.

Blueberry coffee cake.

Blueberry pancakes.

Blueberry scones.

Blueberry jam.

Blueberry syrup.

Blueberry lemonade.

Blueberry ice cream.

Blueberry barbecue sauce.

Blueberry vinaigrette.

Blueberry French toast.

Blueberry cheesecake.

Blueberry cookies.

Blueberry smoothies.

Blueberry everything.

At this point, you're basically running a blueberry test kitchen.

The Great Freezer Discovery.

It's January.

Snow is falling.

You open the freezer.

There they are.

Twelve bags.

Exactly where you left them.

You smile.

Because suddenly it's summer again.

For just a moment.

Those little blueberries somehow remembered July.

The Maine Blueberry Problem.

There isn't one.

Carry on.

Then It Happens.

Someone visits from out of state.

You hand them a handful of wild Maine blueberries.

They smile politely.

Then they taste one.

Their eyebrows go up.

"Oh..."

You smile.

"Right?"

Then you say the words every Mainer eventually says...

"Now you understand."

One Last Thing...

If you currently have...

Blueberries in your refrigerator...

Blueberries in your freezer...

Blueberry muffins on the counter...

Blueberry pancakes planned for breakfast...

Blueberry jam in the pantry...

Blueberry pie cooling on the stove...

And you're still thinking about stopping at one more roadside stand...

Congratulations.

You have not bought too many blueberries.

You're simply having a Maine summer.

And honestly...

We wouldn't have it any other way.

Oh...

And one more thing.

If it's 62 degrees outside...

You're probably eating those blueberries...

...while wearing shorts.

Welcome to Maine.

We had a feeling you'd like it here. 🫐🍁
