You think you know what fall looks like.

You've seen pictures.

You've watched movies.

You've admired the postcards.

You think,

"How different can it really be?"

Then...

September arrives.

And Maine quietly says,

"Hold my apple cider."

You Start Looking at Trees Like They're Celebrities.

One morning they're green.

A few days later...

One tree turns yellow.

Then another turns orange.

Then another turns brilliant red.

Before you know it, you're slowing down just to admire a maple tree.

You actually say things like,

"Did you see that one?"

Yes.

Yes, you did.

You Suddenly Understand the Phrase "Leaf Peeping."

The first time you hear it...

You laugh.

The second time...

You become one.

You find yourself taking the scenic route because someone told you,

"The foliage is really popping up north."

Every Drive Becomes an Adventure.

You leave to buy milk.

Three hours later...

You've driven through three small towns, stopped at a farm stand, found an antique shop, bought cider donuts, and taken 147 pictures.

You forgot the milk.

Apple Cider Donuts Become a Food Group.

You tell yourself...

"I'm only getting one."

You leave with a dozen.

Nobody is judging you.

We've all been there.

Suddenly Everyone Has a Favorite Pumpkin Patch.

You didn't even know pumpkin patches could be competitive.

Then someone asks,

"Where do you go?"

And now...

You have an opinion.

You Become Weirdly Interested in Apples.

Honeycrisp.

Macoun.

Cortland.

McIntosh.

You came to Maine thinking an apple was an apple.

Not anymore.

You Learn That a Flannel Is Perfectly Acceptable for Every Occasion.

Coffee?

Flannel.

Hiking?

Flannel.

Bonfire?

Definitely flannel.

Dinner?

Believe it or not...

Also flannel.

You Start Saying Things Like...

"Smell that?"

Fresh air.

Wood smoke.

Pine.

Fallen leaves.

Someone's fireplace.

Maine in the fall has a smell all its own.

You Discover That Sunsets Somehow Get Better.

The sky turns pink.

Orange.

Purple.

Gold.

You stand there thinking,

"This can't possibly be real."

It is.

You Stop Every Time You See a Farm Stand.

Pumpkins.

Gourds.

Corn stalks.

Maple syrup.

Fresh apples.

Homemade pies.

You came for one pumpkin.

You leave decorating your entire front porch.

The Hoodie Becomes Your Uniform.

You don't need a heavy coat.

Not yet.

It's hoodie weather.

Which, you'll soon discover...

might be Maine's favorite weather.

You Start Planning Around Peak Foliage.

You suddenly know exactly when the leaves are changing in different parts of the state.

You sound like you've lived here forever.

"Western Maine is probably peaking this week."

Who are you?

You Secretly Hope Fall Lasts Forever.

You know winter is coming.

Everyone knows winter is coming.

But for just a few weeks...

Maine feels like someone turned the color saturation all the way up.

Every road is beautiful.

Every hike is unforgettable.

Every little town somehow becomes even more charming.

You find yourself slowing down.

Taking one more picture.

Driving one more back road.

Buying one more cider donut.

Because you don't want it to end.

Then...

One morning...

You step outside.

It's 48 degrees.

You're wearing...

A hoodie.

Shorts.

And boots.

You look completely ridiculous.

You feel completely comfortable.

Congratulations.

You're officially experiencing your first Maine fall.

And if you're already wondering what the leaves will look like next year...

We've got news for you.

You're becoming a Mainer.

Welcome to Maine.

We had a feeling you'd love fall. 🍁
